Agusan del Sur is on the island of Mindanao in the south. Bayugan is one of the newest cities and the only city in the province. According to the 2007* census, it has a population of 95,032 persons. Bayugan has 43 barangays, one of which is Cagbas where the school is located.Started in 2005 with 10 pupils. For the School Year 2008-2009 this number increased to 21 pupils. this year. Pupil beneficiaries come from very poor families whose parents only have seasonal work in rice farms as hired hands. They are paid a daily wage of PhP 120 (EUR 2). Many live in small nipa huts, sometimes very dilapidated, and either owned or lent to them.

Cagayan (Region II – CagayanValley)

Cagayan is in the northern part Luzon. Camanaliugan, where the school is situated, is a 4th class municipality. According to the 2007 census it has a population of 22,489 persons. Started in 2005 with 15 pupils. Number of pupils increased to 35 for the School Year 2008-2009. Many of the fathers of these pupils do not have permanent jobs. They are mostly farm hands who earn some income during the harvest season. Some mothers work as household help. Some of the pupil beneficiaries live far away from the school and the parents cannot afford to pay for the transportation to and from school.

 

Cebu (Region VII – Central Visayas)

Daanbantayan lies in Cebu, one of the islands comprising the Visayan Islands between Luzon and Mindanao. It is 3rd class municipality and has a population of 73,254 persons according to the 2007 census. Agujo is one of the 20 barangays.The Basic Literacy Programme started with the School Year 2008-2009 with 16 pupils. Agujo is a small fishing village on the northern tip of Cebu. Most of the pupils attending the school come from very poor fishermen who rely mostly on their meagre income from the fish they catch from the sea.

Davao del Sur (Region XI – Davao)

Davao del Sur lies in Mindanao and Bansalan is one of the municipalities that comprises of 25 barangays. It has a population of 54,246 persons according to the 2007 census. The pupil beneficiaries come from Poblacion II of Bansalan.Started in 2007 with 10 pupils. For the School Year 2008-2009 this number increased to 15.

 

Ilocos Norte (Region I – Ilocos)

Ilocos Norte lies in the northwestern part of Luzon. Bacarra, where the schools are located in a 4th class municipality, counted 32,485 persons according to the 2007 census. Bacarra is subdivided into 43 barangays.Starting with 10 pupils in 2003, the number increased to 30 for the School Year 2008-2009. All pupil beneficiaries belong to very poor families. Mostly it is only the father who earns a living by fishing or by working in rice farms. Some of the fathers are deceased leaving the mother as the only breadwinner, doing household work for others.

Negros Occidental (Region VI – Western Visayas)

Igmaya-an is one of the 7 barangays comprising Salvador Benedicto. It has a population of 4,936 according to the census of 2007.Started in School Year 2007-2008 with 15 pupils, the number increased to 20 in School Year 2008-2009. Many of the children are over-aged for the level they are in. According to the previous coördinator these children are balik-aral, which means that they are returnees, having stopped going to school at one point and then going back again. The predominant reason for their stopping is poverty.

 

Negros Occidental (Region VI – Western Visayas)

Salvador Benedicto is a 5th class municpality on the island of Negros Occidental in Western Visayas. It has a population of 22,979 according to the census of 2007. Pandanon is one of 7 barangays comprising the municipality and had a population of 2,181 according to the census of 2007.Started in SY 2006-2007 with 18 pupils. Increased to 40 pupils in SY 2008-2009. Salvador Benedicto is a 5th class municipality in Negros Occidental, Western Visayas. Pandanon is one of the 7 barangays comprising the municipality.Many of these pupil beneficiaries are children of very poor parents. The fathers mostly do seasonal work in farms.

Started in School Year 2004-2005 with 18 pupils, increased to 40 in School Year 2008-2009. Mrs. Mallorca was the first coördinator for the Basic Literacy Programme in the Pandanon Elementary School. To effectively monitor the 80 pupils in one school, another coordinator was appointed, Mrs. Magapan.

 

Oriental Mindoro (Region IVB – MIMAROPA)

Oriental Mindoro is located just off the southwestern coast of Luzon and lies northwest of the main Visayas Islands. Bulalacao is in the southernmost tip of Oriental Mindoro and is one of the 15 municipalities of Oriental Mindoro. It is a 4th class muncipality with a population of a 30,188 persons in 2007. Benli is one of the 15 barangays comprising Bulalacao. It is a Mangyan settlement and has a population of 3,395 persons according the census of 2007. The Basic Literacy Programme there started in the School Year of 2003-2004, three years after the implementation of the programme. It started with 20 pupils and increased to 31 in School Year 2008-2009.The pupils belong of the Mangyan Hanunuo Indigenous People tribe, Benli being a Mangyan settlement. Similar to the case of Igmaya-an in Negros Occidental the first batch of pupils were over-aged for the level they were in the elementary school. This is mainly due to poverty due to lack of permanent income of the parents. The coördinator, a teacher, comes from the same settlement as the pupils.

Zambales (Region III – Central Luzon)

Zambales is located in Central Luzon. It has 13 municipalities and 1 city. Palis is one of the 31 barangays of Botolan and has a population of 155 persons according to the 2007 census. Botolan is a 2nd class municipality and the census of 2007 registered 51,675 persons. Palis is a resettlement area for the Aetas who got displaced during the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption.Started with 19 pupils in the School Year 2001-2002, a year after the inception of the Basic Literacy program. For the School Year 2008-2009 the number increased to 37.The pupils belong to the Indigenous People’s tribe of the Aetas.
