Mode of Support

In 2006 Kapatiran entered a partnership with PREDA in order to support the education of some of the children. A proposal for educational assistance was drawn up, submitted to Cordaid and implementation thereof was approved.

Three (3) communities of Indigenous People in the province of Zambales who are currently partners of PREDA in the Integrated Mango-Based Organic Farming Project were selected to directly benefit from this particular project funded by Kapatiran. They are the following:

• The Lubos na Alyansa ng mga Katutubong Ayta sa Sambales (LAKAS) in Botolan, Zambales

• Maporac Aeta Organization (MAO) in Cabangan, Zambales

• GALA Aeta Community in Subic, Zambales

The communities are registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as People’s Organization and as small Non-Government Organization. Each of the three indigenous people’s organization is ruled by a Tribal Chieftain with a Council of elected elders. Their family income mainly comes from the small parcel of land assigned to them by their respective community within their ancestral domain. As farmers they cultivate plant banana, sweet potato and other vegetable crops. Women are tasked to rear their kids and do household chores, lesser opportunity for livelihood. Children within these communities have lesser opportunity for education and health services because of poverty and racial discrimination.

2. After PREDA identified the communities to be assisted, the project team from Fair Trade Department immediately conducted consultation meetings with the Tribal Chieftain and Council of each organization. The details of the project were explained to them. The supplemental assistance will only be for transportation allowance, school uniform and school supplies while tuition fee is excluded. The project team also discussed the necessary requirements of each beneficiary to avail the scholarship fund. Other requirements included personal data, pictures, recommendation from their respective organization. The lists of deserving students per organization with the corresponding requirements were then submitted to the project team for immediate processing of the grant assistance.
